Discovery of Martinique by Christopher Columbus

Discovery of Martinique by Christopher Columbus Beach

Martinique was discovered by Christopher Columbus on June 15, 1502, during his fourth voyage; but it was much later that colonization truly began...

On this beach, on September 1, 1635, 150 French colonists, led by a buccaneer, Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc, disembarked.

They founded the city of Saint-Pierre, built a fort, and began the colonization of Martinique to the detriment of the Carib Indians.
