Photo of Victor Schoelcher statue in Fort de France Martinique

Victor Schoelcher

Another very interesting statue is erected at the entrance of the old courthouse of Fort-de-France:
the Marianne of the Republic is represented very small, as she has just realized how horrible slavery is.

Victor Schoelcher is guiding her back to the right path in a paternal gesture.

I had the opportunity to talk with an elderly Martinican man, nearly 90 years old...

When he spoke of Victor Schoelcher, he was full of praise, his eyes shone with emotion, and he kept repeating to me: "He did so much for us... us, the former black slaves!"
