Photos of sunset on volcano and Santorini's Atlantis myth -

Legendary island of Santorini or Atlantis

Let's return to Fira to admire, once more, a magnificent sunset over the volcano.

This superb view cannot help but remind one of the myth of Atlantis, with which Santorini is often associated...

...this mysterious island described by the Greek philosopher Plato.

Indeed, among all the volcanic eruptions known to Santorini, one in particular was noteworthy...

Around 1600 BC, the volcano erupted, engulfing part of the island and giving rise to its current shape.

This eruption also triggered a massive tsunami; waves 100 meters high moving at 700 km/h devastated parts of nearby Crete and numerous coastal cities around the Mediterranean basin.
